Master Plan 2021 - A Plan to Turn Delhi Into a Smart City

Delhi grasps immense importance for India. Besides being the capital of country of the world's largest democracy, it is also hub of political activity and socio-economic in India. Fascinated by strong economic growth of Delhi has improved tenfold over the last six decades primarily due to immigration from other Indian states making it one the most crowded cities across the globe. Delhi Development Authority was established in 1957 to accommodate a growing population, give adequate infrastructure and oversee well balanced development in Delhi. First time in 1962, 20 years of Master Plan for Delhi (MPD) was introduced. Thereafter, it was customized extensively to cover up the period up to 2001. Currently, the growth of Delhi is being governed by the MPD 2021.

However, planned development in the state has so far not been capable to meet the unprecedented population growth. There is lack of urban infrastructure, such as housing, roads, sewerage, transportation, water and power. According to the estimation of DDA, Delhi's present infrastructure can put up for maximum of 1.5 crore people. With the populace of Delhi set to increase further, developing supplementary infrastructure is becoming demanding by the day. The population is expected to increase to 2.3 crore by 2021 from 1.7 crore in 2011 interpreting into compound annual growth rate of 3.1 per cent.
