Abstract

This study aims to examine language variation in the film Komang from a sociolinguistic perspective, focusing specifically on idiolect, dialect, and sociolect, as well as the social factors underlying their emergence and their relationship to the dynamics of society. The scope of the study is limited to verbal interactions among the characters in the film and does not include nonverbal or visual aspects. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a library-based research design. Data were collected through observation and transcription of the characters’ dialogues in the film and subsequently analyzed using sociolinguistic theories. The findings indicate that idiolect is reflected in the distinctive speech characteristics of each character, dialect is evident in differences in accent and vocabulary based on geographical background, and sociolect emerges through language variations influenced by age, social status, and cultural environment. These findings reveal that language variation—encompassing idiolect, dialect, and sociolect—demonstrates that language in film functions not only as a means of communication but also as a medium for expressing social and cultural identity.   Keywords: language variation; Komang film; Sociolinguistics
