The Integration of Linguistic and Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah Approaches in at-Taḥrīr wa at-Tanwīr

This article examines the dynamics of Qur'anic exegesis renewal through a study of at-Tahrir wa at-Tanwir by Muhammad at-Tahir ibn ‘Asyur. Amidst the complexities of modernity, an interpretation methodology capable of bridging revelation texts with social reality without abandoning traditional authority is urgently required. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive method with a library research approach to dissect Ibn ‘Asyur's methodological construction. The results indicate that Ibn ‘Asyur initiated significant renewal by integrating profound linguistic analysis (lugawi), socio-historical context reconstruction, and a strong orientation towards maqashid asy-syari‘ah (objectives of Islamic law). The study highlights three key findings regarding his response to contemporary issues: first, the reinterpretation of women's leadership (qiwamah) as a functional role based on capacity rather than inherent biological superiority; second, the redefinition of corruption through the linguistic metaphor of adlā, emphasizing substantive justice over formal legality; and third, the defense of religious freedom as a universal right. The study concludes that at-Tahrir wa at-Tanwir represents an integrative and solution-oriented exegesis model, proving that the Qur'an remains relevant (salih li kulli zaman) in addressing ethical and legal problems in the modern era.
