Reconstructing Mu‘Āsyarah Bil Ma‘Rūf: An Integrative Framework For Family Resilience And Divorce Prevention In Indonesia

Scholarship on mu'āsyarah bil ma'rūf remains largely normative and textual, while scholarship on family resilience in Indonesia relies on sociological and psychological indicators that rarely treat Islamic ethics as an analytical framework. Neither body of work supplies an operational religious framework for the ethical erosion behind rising divorce, recorded at 284,169 cases in 2022 with 63.41 percent attributed to unending quarrels and 24.79 percent to economic pressure. This study reconstructs mu'āsyarah bil ma'rūf into an integrative framework for strengthening family resilience and preventing divorce. It is qualitative library research employing an interpretative approach combining maqāṣidī hermeneutics and thematic content analysis. Its textual data are drawn from primary sources (the Qur'an, hadith, classical exegesis, and fiqh), secondary sources (studies of family resilience and marital psychology), and tertiary sources (divorce statistics of Statistics Indonesia for 2020 until 2023, the Marriage Law, and the Compilation of Islamic Law), and are analysed through conceptual coding, comparative reading, and critical synthesis. The study finds, first, that the concept is a reciprocal relational paradigm whose five dimensions correspond systematically to the physical, social, and psychological indicators of family resilience. Second, its implementation is supported by normative, legal, and institutional factors, yet hindered by a patriarchal interpretive inheritance, an expectation gap concerning maintenance, and consumerist visual culture. Third, the concept can be operationalised through three models formulated in this study, namely Adaptive Qiwāmah Leadership, Collaborative Nafaqah, and Holistic Intimacy. The novelty of the study lies in transforming a normative maxim into an operational architecture of family resilience.
