Publication Ethics
Kodifikasia: Jurnal Penelitian Islam is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal published by Universitas Islam Negeri Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari Ponorogo, Indonesia. This publication ethics statement establishes the ethical principles and responsibilities of all parties involved in the publication process, including authors, the Editor-in-Chief, editors, the editorial board, peer reviewers, and the publisher.
This statement is intended to uphold academic integrity, ensure the quality and credibility of published research, and promote responsible scholarly communication. It is informed by the publication ethics principles and best-practice recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), with particular attention to originality, transparency, fairness, confidentiality, accountability, and the prevention of research and publication misconduct.
1. Ethical Guidelines for Journal Publication
The publication of scholarly articles in Kodifikasia contributes to the development and dissemination of reliable academic knowledge. The quality of published research reflects the integrity of authors, the effectiveness of editorial processes, the independence of peer review, and the responsibilities of the institutions involved in scholarly publishing.
Kodifikasia is committed to maintaining ethical standards throughout the submission, review, editorial decision-making, publication, and post-publication processes. Editorial decisions must be based on the scholarly merit, originality, methodological rigor, relevance to the journal’s aims and scope, and contribution of the manuscript to the advancement of Islamic scholarship and related academic disciplines.
The journal does not tolerate plagiarism, data fabrication, data falsification, duplicate publication, manipulated authorship, or other forms of academic misconduct.
2. Responsibilities of Authors
2.1. Originality and Plagiarism
Authors must submit original manuscripts that have not been previously published and are not under consideration for publication elsewhere. All ideas, arguments, data, quotations, and other materials derived from the work of others must be appropriately acknowledged and cited.
Plagiarism in any form, including direct copying without attribution, inappropriate paraphrasing, and the presentation of another person’s ideas or findings as one's own, constitutes unethical publishing behavior.
Authors must ensure that their manuscripts comply with applicable copyright requirements and the journal’s citation and referencing guidelines. Manuscripts may be screened for similarity using appropriate plagiarism-detection tools. Similarity scores will not be considered in isolation; editorial assessment must also examine the nature, context, and source of the identified similarities.
2.2. Research Integrity and Reporting Standards
Authors must present their research accurately, transparently, and objectively. Research findings must be reported honestly, and the data, evidence, and interpretations presented in the manuscript must reflect the work actually conducted.
Fabrication, falsification, selective manipulation of evidence, and the deliberate omission or misrepresentation of findings are unacceptable. Manuscripts must provide sufficient methodological detail and relevant references to enable readers to understand, critically assess, and, where applicable, reproduce the research.
2.3. Authorship and Contributions
Authorship must be based on substantial scholarly contributions to the conception or design of the research, data collection, analysis or interpretation, and the development or critical revision of the manuscript.
All individuals who have made substantial contributions should be appropriately acknowledged as authors or contributors, according to the nature of their contributions. Individuals who have not made significant scholarly contributions must not be listed as authors.
The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all listed authors have approved the final manuscript, agreed to its submission, and accepted responsibility for their respective contributions. Any changes to authorship after submission must be justified and approved by all affected authors, subject to the editor’s decision. Gift authorship, honorary authorship, ghost authorship, and the omission of legitimate contributors are unacceptable.
2.4. Multiple, Redundant, and Concurrent Submissions
Authors must not submit the same manuscript simultaneously to more than one journal. Manuscripts must not contain substantially overlapping publications of the same research findings without appropriate disclosure and justification.
Any previous dissemination of the manuscript or related research, including publication in conference proceedings or another scholarly outlet, must be disclosed to the editor when relevant. The editor will determine whether such prior dissemination affects the manuscript’s eligibility for publication.
2.5. Citation and Acknowledgment of Sources
Authors must properly acknowledge all sources that have influenced their research. Citations must be accurate, relevant, and sufficient to support the claims made in the manuscript. Authors must not engage in citation manipulation, including excessive self-citation, coercive citation, or the addition of irrelevant references intended to artificially increase citation counts.
All references must correspond to sources actually consulted and must follow the journal’s prescribed referencing style.
2.6. Research Ethics and Protection of Participants
Research involving human participants, personal data, vulnerable groups, or sensitive information must comply with applicable ethical standards, institutional requirements, and relevant laws and regulations.
Where required, authors must obtain approval from an appropriate research ethics committee and secure informed consent from participants or their legally authorized representatives. Authors must protect participants’ privacy, confidentiality, dignity, and welfare.
Research involving children or other vulnerable populations requires particular attention to appropriate consent, assent, safeguarding, and confidentiality procedures.
Authors must disclose relevant ethical approvals and consent procedures in the manuscript when applicable. Research involving animals must comply with applicable ethical standards and regulations.
2.7. Use of Artificial Intelligence
Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and ethical acceptability of their manuscripts, including content produced or assisted by artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
AI tools must not be listed as authors. Their use must not replace the authors’ responsibility for scholarly judgment, critical analysis, source verification, and the validity of research findings.
Where AI tools have been used in a substantive manner in research design, data analysis, image generation or modification, or manuscript preparation, authors must disclose such use when relevant to the integrity, reproducibility, or interpretation of the research and in accordance with the journal’s applicable policy.
Authors must not use AI tools to fabricate data, references, quotations, research findings, or other scholarly evidence. Authors are responsible for verifying all AI-assisted content and ensuring that confidential information, personal data, and copyrighted materials are not improperly disclosed or used.
2.8. Conflicts of Interest and Funding Disclosure
Authors must disclose any financial, professional, institutional, personal, or other interests that could reasonably be perceived as influencing the research, its interpretation, or its publication.
All sources of research funding and relevant financial support must be acknowledged. Where no relevant conflict of interest exists, authors should provide an appropriate declaration.
2.9. Errors in Submitted or Published Articles
Authors must promptly notify the editor if they discover significant errors or inaccuracies in a submitted or published article.
Authors are expected to cooperate with the editorial team in correcting the scholarly record through an appropriate correction, corrigendum, retraction, or other editorial action, depending on the nature and severity of the issue.
3. Responsibilities of Editors
3.1. Publication Decisions
The Editor-in-Chief, supported by the editorial team, is responsible for determining which manuscripts are suitable for publication.
Editorial decisions must be based on the manuscript’s scholarly quality, originality, methodological soundness, relevance to the journal’s aims and scope, contribution to Islamic scholarship, and the results of peer review.
Decisions must not be influenced by the authors’ race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, institutional affiliation, religious beliefs, political views, or personal relationships.
3.2. Fair Play and Editorial Independence
Editors must evaluate manuscripts fairly, objectively, and consistently. All submissions must receive equitable consideration under the journal’s editorial policies.
Editorial decisions must remain independent of commercial interests, advertising revenue, sponsorship, personal relationships, institutional pressure, or other external influences.
3.3. Confidentiality
Editors and editorial staff must maintain the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and related communications. Manuscript information may only be shared with individuals directly involved in the editorial process or with other parties when disclosure is justified by legitimate editorial, ethical, or legal requirements.
Unpublished materials contained in submitted manuscripts must not be used in an editor’s own research or other activities without the author’s explicit written permission.
3.4. Conflicts of Interest
Editors must declare any actual or potential conflict of interest that could compromise their impartiality. An editor who has a conflict of interest concerning a manuscript must not participate in its evaluation or decision-making and must arrange for an independent editor to handle the submission.
3.5. Peer Review Management
Editors are responsible for selecting qualified and independent reviewers whose expertise is appropriate to the manuscript’s subject matter and methodology.
Editors must provide reviewers with clear instructions, ensure that the review process is conducted fairly and confidentially, and consider reviewers’ comments carefully before making editorial decisions.
The journal applies a double-blind peer-review process, in which the identities of authors and reviewers are concealed from each other, subject to the journal’s established review procedures.
3.6. Handling Ethical Misconduct
Editors must take reasonable and appropriate action when allegations or evidence of publication misconduct arise. Such action may include requesting clarification or supporting documentation from authors, consulting reviewers or editorial advisers, contacting relevant institutions when justified, and issuing corrections or retractions where necessary. Allegations must be assessed fairly and confidentially, and all relevant parties must be given an appropriate opportunity to respond.
4. Responsibilities of Peer Reviewers
4.1. Contribution to Editorial Decisions
Peer reviewers assist editors in evaluating the scholarly quality, originality, validity, and relevance of submitted manuscripts. Their assessments should help editors make informed publication decisions and help authors improve their work.
4.2. Qualification and Timeliness
Reviewers should accept assignments only when they possess appropriate expertise and can complete the review within the agreed timeframe.
Reviewers who are unable to assess a manuscript adequately or cannot complete the review promptly must inform the editor and decline or withdraw from the assignment.
4.3. Confidentiality
Manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. Reviewers must not share, reproduce, distribute, or discuss manuscript content with unauthorized individuals.
Unpublished data, arguments, methods, or ideas obtained through peer review must not be used for personal or professional advantage.
4.4. Objectivity and Constructive Evaluation
Reviews must be conducted objectively and professionally. Reviewers should provide clear, evidence-based, and constructive comments that explain their assessments and recommendations.
Personal criticism, discriminatory remarks, hostile language, and unsupported allegations are inappropriate.
4.5. Acknowledgment of Sources and Detection of Misconduct
Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited and alert the editor to possible plagiarism, substantial overlap with other publications, suspicious data, or other potential ethical concerns.
Concerns should be communicated confidentially to the editor with sufficient explanation or supporting evidence.
4.6. Conflicts of Interest
Reviewers must disclose any actual or potential conflicts of interest arising from financial, institutional, personal, competitive, or collaborative relationships with the authors or organizations involved in the research.
Reviewers must decline assignments when such conflicts could reasonably compromise the impartiality of their assessment.
5. Responsibilities of the Publisher
Universitas Islam Negeri Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari Ponorogo, as the publisher of Kodifikasia, supports the editorial team in maintaining the integrity and quality of the journal’s publication processes.
The publisher is responsible for providing appropriate institutional support for ethical publishing practices, protecting editorial independence, and supporting reasonable procedures for addressing allegations of misconduct.
The publisher must ensure that commercial considerations, advertising, sponsorship, or other financial arrangements do not improperly influence editorial decisions.
Where ethical concerns arise, the publisher will cooperate with the Editor-in-Chief and relevant parties to facilitate a fair investigation and appropriate action. Such action may include corrections, retractions, publication of editorial notices, or other measures necessary to preserve the integrity of the scholarly record.
6. Publication Decisions and Peer-Review Process
All submitted manuscripts are subject to an initial editorial assessment to determine their suitability for the journal’s aims and scope, compliance with submission requirements, originality, and basic scholarly quality.
Manuscripts considered suitable for further consideration are sent for independent peer review. Reviewers assess the manuscript’s scholarly contribution, theoretical framework, methodological rigor, analysis, clarity, and relevance to the field.
Based on the reviews and editorial assessment, a manuscript may be accepted, returned for revision, or rejected. The final publication decision rests with the Editor-in-Chief or an appropriately authorized editor.
Acceptance of a manuscript is not guaranteed by submission, revision, institutional affiliation, or payment of any fee. Editorial decisions must be based on scholarly merit and compliance with the journal’s policies.
7. Plagiarism, Research Misconduct, and Ethical Violations
Kodifikasia does not tolerate plagiarism, self-plagiarism that constitutes redundant publication, data fabrication, data falsification, manipulated images or evidence, duplicate submission, citation manipulation, fraudulent authorship, or other forms of research and publication misconduct.
When potential misconduct is identified, the journal will assess the available evidence and may request an explanation from the author. Depending on the circumstances, the journal may reject the manuscript, suspend the editorial process, request corrections, notify relevant institutions, or take appropriate post-publication action.
Decisions concerning suspected misconduct must be proportionate to the evidence and the seriousness of the alleged violation. The journal will seek to preserve fairness, confidentiality, and the integrity of the scholarly record throughout the process.
8. Corrections, Retractions, and Post-Publication Issues
Kodifikasia recognizes its responsibility to maintain the accuracy and reliability of the scholarly record after publication. When significant errors are identified, the journal will assess whether a correction, corrigendum, expression of concern, retraction, or other editorial notice is appropriate.
Corrections may be issued when errors can be rectified without invalidating the article’s principal findings or conclusions. Retractions may be considered when findings are unreliable because of serious errors or misconduct, when substantial plagiarism is established, or when significant ethical violations undermine the validity or integrity of the publication.
Published articles subject to retraction will remain identifiable as retracted, with an appropriate notice explaining the reason, in accordance with the journal’s procedures. The journal will aim to make post-publication actions transparent while respecting applicable legal and ethical obligations.
Authors who identify significant errors in their published work are expected to notify the editor promptly and cooperate in resolving the issue.
9. Complaints and Appeals
Authors may submit a reasoned appeal against an editorial decision or raise a complaint concerning the editorial or peer-review process.
Appeals and complaints must be submitted through the journal’s designated communication channels and should include relevant information or supporting evidence. They will be assessed by the Editor-in-Chief or an appropriate independent editor, taking account of the journal’s policies and the circumstances of the case.
Where the complaint concerns the Editor-in-Chief or an individual directly involved in the decision, an independent and impartial person should be assigned to assess the matter.
The journal will seek to resolve complaints and appeals fairly, consistently, and without retaliation against individuals who raise legitimate concerns in good faith.
10. Ethical Responsibilities and Accountability
All parties involved in the publication process are expected to uphold academic integrity, professional conduct, transparency, and mutual respect.
By submitting a manuscript to Kodifikasia, authors confirm that the work complies with the journal’s publication ethics requirements and that all relevant declarations, permissions, and approvals have been obtained where applicable.
The editorial team, reviewers, and publisher share responsibility for protecting the credibility of the journal and the integrity of scholarly communication.
Kodifikasia is committed to maintaining these principles in order to advance reliable research, strengthen Islamic scholarship, and foster responsible academic dialogue across disciplines.
